With global warming becoming a reality, and many countries recording soaring ambient temperature, there has been clamour to evolve heat tolerant breeds. Excessive heat and humidity affects dry-matter intake and energy loss, resulting in losses in milk production and reproduction.
The breed gets its name from the area where it is reared predominantly. Kasaragod is the northern most district of Kerala bestowed with vast coastal area in the west, plains in the South and hills in North.
Because of resilience in heat tolerance and disease resistance humped cattle have been introduced in many countries for rearing in areas where climate is harsh and temperate climate breeds can’t survive.
In India we do find lot of cows and bulls that are of short stature. In general these are labelled ‘non-descript’. This word is a misnomer and should be discontinued. In the US too such cows for show purpose were imported and named ‘Miniature Zebu’ ………
Cattle native to tropical climate, especially Zebu, are genetically well adapted to climate stress, infections and infestations prevalent in the native area but their productivity is found to be low.
